Word Wizard Help
Crosswords
You can use the Chambers Word Wizard to find possible solutions where you have some, but not all, of the letters in a crossword answer. Although particularly useful to crossword puzzlers and compilers, it is also of use in other puzzles.
Simply key in all the letters that you know, indicating those that you do not know with a question mark (eg CR???W??D will give CROSSWORD as a possible solution). The result will be either:
- A list of possible solutions
- No words found
The Crossword Solver database includes:
- all the words from The Chambers Dictionary plus their inflected forms (eg solves, solved and solving are inflected forms of solve)
- plus proper names and encyclopedic terms from other Chambers reference books (eg London, Marco Polo and The Magic Flute)
- all the words from Official Scrabble® Words International
Anagrams
The Chambers Word Wizard allows you to find anagrams of words, phrases or unordered sets of letters. It is therefore useful to crossword puzzlers and to Scrabble and other wordgame players.
Simply key in a word, a phrase or a set of letters and click on the arrow or hit return. The result will be either:
- A list of anagrams, or
- No anagrams found
The Anagrams database includes:
- all the words from The Chambers Dictionary plus their inflected forms (eg solves, solved and solving are inflected forms of solve)
- plus proper names and encyclopedic terms from other Chambers reference books (eg London, Marco Polo and The Magic Flute)
- all the words from Official Scrabble® Words International
Scrabble
The Chambers Word Wizard allows you to find out whether a word is allowable in Scrabble, playing either with UK words only or with UK plus US words.
Simply key in the word you wish to check and click on the arrow or hit return. The result will be either:
- OSW meaning an Official Scrabble Word in the UK,
- US indicating it is US in origin and is from Chambers Official Scrabble® Words International, or
- Not Not an allowable Scrabble® word
The Scrabble® database includes:
- all the UK allowable words in Chambers Official Scrabble® Words
- plus the longer UK allowable Scrabble words from The Chambers Dictionary
- plus the US allowable words that are included in Chambers Official Scrabble® Words International – the latter are clearly marked as US in origin
Consult Chambers 21st Century Dictionary, The Chambers Thesaurus (1996) or Chambers Biographical Dictionary (1997 edition with amendments). Enter your search and choose your title from the drop-down menu.
Search Tip
A wildcard is a special character you can use to replace one or more characters in a word. There are two types of wildcard. The first is a question mark ?, which matches a single character. The second is an asterisk *, which matches zero or more characters. The two kinds of wildcard can be mixed in a single search.
