frequency noun (frequencies) 1 the condition of happening often. 2 the rate at which a happening, phenomenon, etc, recurs. 3 physics (SI unit hertz; abbreviation f) a measure of the rate at which a complete cycle of wave motion is repeated per unit time. 4 radio the rate of sound waves per second at which a particular radio signal is sent out. See under very high frequency. 5 statistics the number of items, values, etc, that occur within a specified category, eg the number of students with a score of 90 to 100 in a class test may be five, so for that category the frequency is five.
