Adelaide, St, German Adelheid 931-99
Holy Roman Empress
The daughter of Rudolf II of Burgundy, she married Lothair, son of Hugh of Italy, in 947. After his death (950) she was imprisoned by his successor, Berengar II, but was rescued by King Otto I, the Great, of Germany, who married her in 951. They became emperor and empress in 962. Their son was Otto II, over whom Adelaide exercised considerable influence when he succeeded his father (973). She became joint regent with the Empress Theophano for her grandson Otto III, and sole regent from 991 to 996. A prominent supporter of the Cluniac reform movement, she retired to a convent she had founded at Seltz in Alsace. Her feast day is 16 December.

The second is an asterisk *, which matches zero or more characters. The two kinds of wildcard can be mixed in a single search.
