Agrippina, the Elder c.14BC-AD33
Roman noblewoman

She was the daughter of Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa and granddaughter of the Emperor Augustus. She married Germanicus Caesar, and was the mother of Caligula and Agrippina, the Younger. Regarded as a model of heroic womanhood, she accompanied her husband on his campaigns, and took his ashes home when he was murdered (AD19). Her popularity led the jealous Tiberius to banish her (AD30) to the island of Pandataria, where she died of starvation in suspicious circumstances. A portrait of her survives in the Capitoline Museum, Rome.
