British princess

Born at Buckingham Palace, London, she was the second daughter of Queen Victoria. In 1862 she married Prince Louis of Hesse-Darmstadt, who succeeded his uncle as Grand Duke (1877). They had four daughters: the eldest became the mother of Louis, Earl Mountbatten; the youngest, Alexandra (Alix) Fyodorovna married Nicholas II of Russia.
