Andrade, Edward Neville da Costa 1887-1971
English physicist
He was born in London and studied there before receiving his PhD from Heidelberg University. He continued his studies at Cambridge and Manchester, and became Professor of Physics at the Artillery College in Woolwich (1920-28) and University College London (1928-50). For part of World War II he was scientific adviser to the director of scientific research at the Ministry of Supply. He was known for his work on grain growth in metals and the viscosity of liquids. From 1950 until his retirement in 1952 he was director of the Royal Institution and the Davy-Faraday Laboratory.

Search Tip
