Anne of Denmark 1574-1619
Danish princess, and Queen of Scotland and England

The daughter of King Frederik II of Denmark, she married (1589) James VI of Scotland, the future James I of England. A convert to Roman Catholicism, she was empty-headed, high-spirited and extravagant, but encouraged the arts and architecture, and appeared in dramatic roles in court masques by Ben Jonson. In her later years she lived apart from her husband.
