Antony or Anthony, St, also called Antony of Egypt or Antony the Great c.251-356AD
Egyptian ascetic and the father of Christian monasticism

Born in Koman, Upper Egypt, he sold his possessions for the poor at 20, then spent 20 years in the desert, where he withstood a famous series of temptations, often represented in later art. In AD305 he left his retreat and founded a monastery near Memphis and Arsinoë. Aged over 100, he made a journey to Alexandria in c.355 to dispute with the Arians, but soon returned to his desert home. St Athanasius wrote his biography. His feast day is 17 January.
