Ariosto, Ludovico 1474-1533
Italian poet

Born in Reggio nell'Emilia, he abandoned law for poetry. At the court of Cardinal Ippolito d'Este, at Ferrara, he produced, over a period of 10 years, his great poem, Orlando Furioso (1516, 'Orlando Enraged', enlarged 3rd edition, 1532), which takes up the epic tale of Roland (as Orlando) from the French chansons de geste and forms a continuation of Matteo Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato ('Orlando in Love'). He also wrote comedies, satires, sonnets, and a number of Latin poems.
