Arminius d.19AD
Chief of the German Cherusci

He served as an officer in the Roman army and acquired Roman citizenship. However, in AD9 he allied with other German tribes against the Romans, and in the Teutoburg Forest ambushed and annihilated an entire Roman army of three legions commanded by Publius Quintilius Varus. As a result the Emperor Augustus abandoned the attempt to extend the Roman frontier from the Rhine to the Elbe. Arminius continued to resist the Romans and the Marcomanni, but was murdered by some of his own kinsmen. Tacitus praised him as the 'liberator of Germany'.
