Ardashir I, also called Artaxerxes d.241AD
Founder of the Persian dynasty of the Sassanids

He overthrew Ardavan (Artabanus), the last of the Parthian kings (c.226AD). He next conquered Media and a large part of the Iranian highlands, and created the biggest threat faced by Rome in the East, but was defeated by Alexander Severus (233). He made Zoroastrianism the state religion.
