Atahualpa c.1502-1533
Last Emperor of the Incas

On the death of his father Huayna-Capac (c.1527) he ruled the northern half of the Inca Empire, the Kingdom of Quito, and in 1532 overthrew his elder brother, Huáscar, who ruled Peru from Cuzco. Brave, ambitious, and popular with his troops, he was captured (1532) by the Spaniards led by Francisco Pizarro, who invaded and conquered Peru. Although a vast ransom was paid for his release, Atahualpa was found guilty of treason and strangled to death.
