Augereau, Pierre François Charles, Duc de Castiglione 1757-1816
French soldier

Of humble origins, he achieved rapid promotion under Napoleon I in Italy, where he fought at Lodi and Castiglione (1796). In 1797 he defeated a royalist coup against the Directory. He opposed Napoleon's assumption of power as First Consul in 1799, but was reconciled, and promoted to marshal in 1804 and created Duke of Castiglione in 1808. On Napoleon's fall in 1814 he declared for the monarchy, but was forced to retire.
