Bach, Johann Christian, known as the London Bach 1735-82
German composer
Born in Leipzig, he was the 11th and youngest son of J S Bach, and studied under his brother C P E Bach in Berlin and, from 1754, in Italy. After becoming a Catholic, he was appointed organist at Milan (1760) where he composed ecclesiastical music, including two masses, a requiem and a Te Deum, as well as operas. In 1762 he settled in London and was appointed composer to the London Italian opera. He became musician to Queen Charlotte Sophia (1763) and later collaborated with Karl Friedrich Abel (1723-87). The young Mozart on his London visit (1764) took to him and was influenced by his style. Bach developed symphonic form, and was twice painted by Thomas Gainsborough.

Search Tip
