Barbarossa, Khair-ed-din, known as Redbeard d.1546
Barbary pirate
Born in Mitylene, he became a Turkish corsair along with his brother, attacking shipping in the Mediterranean. After the execution of his brother Horuk (1518), Barbarossa captured Algiers (1529) and was made admiral of the Homan fleet (1533).
