Sultan of the Ottoman Empire
Born in Thrace, he succeeded his father, Mehmet II, the conqueror of Constantinople (Istanbul), in 1481. During his reign a succession of wars against Hungary, Poland, Venice, Egypt and Persia (Iran) served, on the whole, to establish Ottoman power in the Balkans, Asia Minor and the eastern Mediterranean.
