Bennett, Sir William Sterndale 1816-75
English pianist and composer

Born in Sheffield, he studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London, and at Leipzig, and attracted Felix Mendelssohn's attention at the Düsseldorf Musical Festival (1833). In 1849 he founded the Bach Society, becoming Professor of Music at Cambridge (1856), and in 1868 Principal of the Royal Academy of Music. His earlier compositions, piano pieces, songs, and the cantatas The May Queen (1858) and The Women of Samaria (1867), are his most popular works.
