British soldier

He joined the army in 1785 and served in Nova Scotia and Egypt. He distinguished himself at the taking of the Cape of Good Hope (1806) and at the capture and loss of Buenos Aires (1807). In the Peninsular War (1808-14) he took the command (1809) of the Portuguese army, and defeated Marshal Soult at Albuera (1811). He was present at the capture of Badajoz (1812), and at Salamanca was severely wounded. He left Portugal in 1822, and in the Wellington administration (1828-30) was Master-General of the Ordnance.
