Bernard of Clairvaux, St, also known as the Mellifluous Doctor 1090-1153
French theologian and reformer

Born near Dijon, he entered the Cistercian monastery of Cîteaux in 1113. In 1115 he became the first abbot of the newly founded monastery of Clairvaux, in Champagne. He led a studious, ascetic life and founded more than 70 monasteries. Known for his eloquence, an antidote to the dry scholasticism of the age, he drew up the statutes of the Knights Templars in 1128, secured the recognition of Pope Innocent II, and spoke (1146) in favour of France taking part in the Second Crusade. His writings comprise more than 400 epistles, 340 sermons, a Life of St Malachy, and several theological treatises. The monks of his reformed branch of the Cistercians are often called Bernardines. He was canonized in 1174, and his feast day is 20 August.
