Born in Lille, a fellow student with Vincent Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec at the Académie of Fernand Cormon, he later worked with Paul Gauguin at Pont Aven. In Paris in 1889 he joined the Group Synthétiste and in 1890 launched a magazine, La Rénovation esthétique. He travelled for several years in Egypt and the Middle East, returning to Paris in 1901. From 1921 to 1928 he lived in Venice. He is credited with founding the so-called Cloisonnist style.
