Bernoulli, Jean or Johann 1667-1748
Swiss mathematician

He was born in Basle, the younger brother of Jacques Bernoulli, graduated in medicine but turned to mathematics, and became professor at the universities of Groningen (1695) and Basle (1705). He wrote on differential equations, both in general and with respect to the length and area of curves, isochronous curves and curves of quickest descent. He founded a dynasty of mathematicians which continued for two generations, and was employed by the Marquis de l'Hospital to help him write the first textbook on the differential calculus.
