Berry, Charles Ferdinand de Bourbon, Duc de 1778-1820
French aristocrat

He was born at Versailles, the second son of Charles X. During the Revolution and Empire he lived in exile in Russia and England. In 1814 he returned to France, was appointed commander of the troops in and around Paris (1815), and in 1816 married Caroline (1798-1870), eldest daughter of Francis, afterwards King of the Two Sicilies. Assassinated by the Bonapartist fanatic Pierre Louis Louvel in front of the Paris Opéra, he left only a daughter; but the same year the widowed duchess gave birth to Henri, Comte de Chambord.
