Blum, René 1878-1942
French impresario and critic

Born in Paris, he became critic and editor of the literary journal Gil Blas. While he was director of the Theatre of the Monte Carlo Casino he took over the administration of the Ballets Russes immediately after Sergei Diaghilev's death in 1929, renaming it the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, with Léonide Massine as director. During World War II he was arrested in France while the company was on tour in the USA, and he died within a week of being sent to Auschwitz.
