Bohemond I c.1056-1111
Prince of Antioch

The eldest son of Robert Guiscard, he distinguished himself in his father's war against the Byzantine Emperor, Alexius I Comnenus (1081-85). His brother Roger took the Apulian throne, and Bohemond joined the First Crusade (1096). While the other crusaders advanced to storm Jerusalem, he established himself as first Latin prince in Antioch (1098). He was taken prisoner by the Turks (1100-03), then returned to Europe to collect troops, and after defeating Alexius (1107) was acknowledged by him as Prince of Antioch in return for his vassalage.
