Bonaparte, Marie Letizia, née Ramolino c.1749-1836
Corsican noblewoman

Born in Ajaccio, the daughter of a French army captain, she married Charles Marie Bonaparte in 1764. Of her 12 children, five died in infancy; the fourth child became Napoleon I. She was accorded official status as 'Madame Mčre de l'Empereur' (1804) and encouraged her son to seek reconciliation with the Church. Her half-brother Cardinal Fesch (1763-1839) became Archbishop of Lyons. She supported the fallen Napoleon on Elba (1814) but spent the last 18 years of her life in dignified retirement in Rome.
