Bond, Edward 1934-
English dramatist and director

He was born in London. His work uses a variety of metaphors for the corruption of the capitalist society. His first play, The Pope's Wedding, was given a Sunday night reading at the Royal Court Theatre, London, in 1962 and aroused great controversy. Saved (1965) achieved notoriety through a scene in which a baby in a pram is stoned to death. Both these plays were set in contemporary England, although later plays, such as Narrow Road to the Deep North (1968), use historical themes to look at broad contemporary issues. Other plays include Lear (1972), a reworking of Shakespeare's play, The Fool (1976), based on the life of the 'peasant poet', John Clare, The Woman (1978), in which the characters are drawn from Greek tragedy, The Worlds (1979), a trilogy, The War Plays (1985), for television, Olly's Prison (1992) and Tuesday (1993), and Coffee: a tragedy (1995).
