Scottish soldier

He was born in Perthshire. Commissioned in the Coldstream Guards in 1710, in 1755 he was appointed to command against the French in the French and Indian Wars in America. He was mortally wounded when ambushed on his way to attack Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh), on 9 July 1755. His force was decimated and of his staff only George Washington escaped unhurt.
