Britannicus, in full Claudius Tiberius Britannicus Caesar AD 41-55
Emperor's son

He was the son of the Emperor Claudius and Messalina, and was surnamed in honour of his father's triumph in Britain (AD43). Claudius's fourth wife, Agrippina, the Younger, caused her husband to adopt her son Nero, and treat Britannicus as an imbecile. Nero, after his accession, had his step-brother poisoned, claiming he was subject to epileptic fits. He is the subject of a tragedy by Racine.
