Bull, John c.1563-1628
English organist and composer

Born in Somerset, he was appointed organist in the Queen's Chapel in 1586, first music lecturer at Gresham College in 1597 and organist to James VI an I in 1607. A Catholic, he fled to Belgium in 1613, and in 1615 became organist of Antwerp Cathedral. Considered one of the founders of contrapuntal keyboard music, he has been credited with composing 'God save the King'.
