He was the Chief Justice of England, under King John and Henry III (1215-32), and was virtual ruler for the last four years, but now is chiefly remembered as the jailer of Prince Arthur. He was created Earl of Kent in 1227. He was imprisoned (1232-34) after falling from favour, but later pardoned.
