Bute, John Stuart, 3rd Earl of 1713-92
Scottish statesman

He succeeded his father in 1723, and about 1737 becamea lord of the bedchamber of Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales. On the Prince's death (1751), Bute became Groom of the Stole to his son, afterwards George III, whom he strongly influenced. He was the main instrument in breaking the power of the Whigs and establishing the personal rule of the monarch through parliament. He was made Prime Minister in 1762, replacing the popular Earl of Chatham, thus making him the most disliked politician in the country. He resigned in 1763, after the Seven Years War.
