Carausius, Marcus Aurelius Mausaeus d.293AD
Roman emperor in Britain

He was born in Menapia (Belgium). Originally a Batavian pilot, Carausius had been put in command of the Roman fleet (Classis Britannica) in the Channel to ward off pirates. A usurper, he ruled from AD287, and was murdered by one of his officers, Allectus, who later set himself up as emperor in Britain in his stead.
