English conspirator, leader of the Gunpowder Plot

He was born in Lapworth, Warwickshire, into a wealthy Roman Catholic family. As a recusant he suffered fines and imprisonment under Elizabeth I. He was named as an accomplice in the 1603 plot against James VI and I, and in 1605 he was the chief instigator of the Gunpowder Plot. He was shot dead while resisting arrest.
