Cavalcanti, Guido c.1240-1300
Italian poet

He was born in Florence. A friend of Dante, he married a Ghibelline, and was banished by the Guelfs. He returned to Florence only to die within the year. His works, which included ballads, sonnets and canzoni, were translated by Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Ezra Pound. He is said to have been studious and eccentric, and much of his poetry reflects his intellectualism, although he is also aware of the emotional depths of his usual subject, love.
