Cellini, Benvenuto 1500-71
Italian goldsmith, sculptor and engraver

He was born in Florence, from where he was banished after a duel. In Rome his skill as an artist in metalwork brought him to the notice of nobles and prelates, but he was imprisoned several times for murdering or maiming his rivals. For some years he lived alternately in Rome and Florence, Mantua and Naples. His best work includes the gold salt-cellar of Neptune and Triton made for Francis I of France (now in Vienna), and his bronze Perseus with the Head of Medusa, which was made in Florence while he worked under the patronage of Cosimo I de' Medici. He is also remembered for his autobiography (1558-62, first translated into English by Thomas Nugent, 2 vols 1771).
