Charles V, called the Wise 1338-80
King of France

He was born at Vincennes, and as Dauphin he acted as regent during the long captivity of his father John II, after the Battle of Poitiers (1356), and succeeded his father in 1364. He reorganized the army, established a navy and regained most of the territory lost to the English. A patron of the arts, he redecorated the Louvre to house his splendid library.
