Charles VIII, called the Affable 1470-98
King of France

Born in Amboise, he succeeded his father, Louis XI, in 1483. Until 1492 the government was run by his sister, Anne de Beaujeu, and her husband. In 1494 he invaded Italy, but he failed in an attempt to secure the Kingdom of Naples (1495-96) which inaugurated a series of French expeditions to Italy that lasted until 1559.
