Kristian I 1426-81
King of Denmark, of Norway and of Sweden

The founder of the Oldenburg royal line, he was the son of Dietrich, Count of Oldenburg, and Hedvig, heiress of Schleswig and Holstein. Improvident and spendthrift, he maintained a splendid court in Copenhagen, but was always chronically short of money; to provide part of a dowry for the marriage of his daughter Margaret to James III of Scotland, he mortgaged Orkney and Shetland - a pledge that was never redeemed. In Denmark he founded the University of Copenhagen in 1478. He was succeeded by his son, Johan I (1455-1513), who ruled from 1481 to 1513.
