Kristian VII 1749-1808
King of Denmark and Norway

Born in Copenhagen, the son and successor (1766) of Frederik V, he married his cousin Caroline Matilda, sister of King George III of Great Britain (1766), and toured Europe (1768), accompanied by his court physician, Count Johann Struensee (1737-72). Struensee was appointed Privy Councillor (1770), became the queen's lover, and seized effective power, but in 1772 he was charged with treason and executed, while the queen was divorced and exiled to Hanover. The king was judged insane in 1784, and relinquished control to his son, Crown Prince Frederik, who later succeeded as Frederik VI.
