Cibber, Colley 1671-1757
English actor and dramatist

He was born in London, the son of the Schleswig sculptor, Caius Gabriel Cibber (1630-1700), and educated at Grantham School, Lincolnshire. In 1690 he joined the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane, and there, except for short intervals, spent his whole career. His first comedy, Love's Last Shift (1696), established his fame both as dramatist and actor. From 1711 he was joint manager of Drury Lane. In 1730 he was appointed Poet Laureate. An Apology for the Life of Mr Colley Cibber, Comedian (1740), his autobiography, gives a vivid picture of the theatre of his time.
