Cleisthenes 6th century BC
Athenian politician

A member of the Alcmaeonid family, he was the founder of Athenian democracy. After the fall of the tyrant Hippias (see Pisistratus) in 510BC he completely reorganized the Athenian state. His constitutional reforms (c.507) undermined traditional local loyalties by dividing the citizen body of Athens into 10 tribes (phylai), each comprising citizens from all regions of Attica: the city, coast and inland areas. Each tribe contributed 50 members annually to the democratic council of 500, and in all respects the Cleisthenic tribes provided the organizational basis for the democracy as it developed in the 5th to 4th century BC.
