Constantine II or XII 1940-
King of Greece

Born near Athens, he was the son and successor of Paul I. Soon after his accession (1964) he married Princess Anne-Marie, younger daughter of Frederik IX of Denmark and sister of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. In 1967 the Colonels' Junta seized power in a military coup. The king made an abortive attempt to regain power, and fled into exile in Rome. He was formally deposed (1973), and the monarchy was abolished by national referendum (1974). He now lives in London. His heir is Crown Prince Paul (1967- ).
