Welsh Labour politician

Born in Neath, Glamorgan, he was educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge, and at the London School of Economics. He served in World War I and was a Labour MP (1924-31, 1935-59). He became Minister for Economic Warfare in 1940 and then President of the Board of Trade (1942) in Churchill's war-time coalition. In 1945 he became Labour Chancellor of the Exchequer, nationalized the Bank of England (1946) but resigned following 'budget leakages' to a journalist in 1947. He published his memoirs, High Tide and After, in 1962.
