Damasus I, St c.304-384AD
Roman deacon and pope

He was possibly of Spanish descent. His election in AD366 was violently contested, but confirmed by Valentinian I. He opposed Arianism, and condemned Apollinaris, the Younger at the Council of Constantinople in 381. In 382 he proclaimed the primacy of the see of Rome. He restored the catacombs and wrote epitaphs for the tombs of the martyrs. He commissioned St Jerome, his secretary, to revise the Bible, which resulted in the Vulgate version. His feast day is 11 December.
