The grandson of Artaxerxes II, he was king from 336BC. He was defeated by Alexander the Great at the Granicus (334), at Issus (333) and at Gaugamela or Arbela (331), and was killed by a satrap, Bessus, on his retreat. He was the last king of the Achaemenid dynasty.
