Russian ballet impresario, personality and publicist

Born in Kaunas, and originally an army officer, he began his theatrical career in Paris as assistant to Prince Zeretelli, director of an itinerant Russian opera company. In 1932 he and René Blum co-founded the Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo, heir to Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. The company gained an international reputation for its high calibre dancers.
