Delaroche, (Hippolyte-) Paul, 1797-1856
French painter

Born in Paris, he studied under Antoine Jean Gros, and specialized in romantic historical subjects such as the Death of Queen Elizabeth (1827) and the Execution of Lady Jane Grey (1834). From this period until 1841 he was engaged on his largest work, the mural Apotheosis of Art in the École des Beaux-Arts, in which he was aided by Edward Armitage and other pupils.
