Derain, André 1880-1954
French artist

Born in Chatou, he is most famous for his Fauve pictures, executed from 1904 to 1908, when he was associated with Maurice de Vlaminck and Henri Matisse. Later landscape pictures show a romantic realism influenced by Cézanne. He also designed for the theatre (notably the Diaghilev ballet) and illustrated several books.
