Desmond, Earl of
Irish title

It was conferred (1329) on Maurice Fitzgerald along with County Kerry, and last borne by Gerald Fitzgerald, 15th Earl, who rebelled (1579-80) against Queen Elizabeth I, sacked Youghal by night and was proclaimed a traitor. He escaped the fate of the garrison at Smerwick, but was driven at last from his strongholds, wandered about for over two years, and was killed (1583) in a cabin in the Kerry Mountains.
