Döbereiner, Johann Wolfgang 1780-1849
German chemist

He was born in Bug bei Hof, Bavaria, and received little education but read extensively and attended science lectures. Professor at Jena from 1810, he is remembered as the inventor of 'Döbereiner's lamp', in which hydrogen, produced in the lamp by the action of sulphuric acid on zinc, burns on contact with a platinum sponge.
